New Ethical Products

Nearly all the products that we sell at Greenslate Community Farm are stocked for specific reasons. We try, wherever possible, to tick all three of these boxes:

  • Local
  • Ethical
  • Organic

It is difficult to find products that fulfil all of these criteria, but usually one or two are possible. We also have other considerations such as the environment, sustainability, and just being good enough for you to want to buy.

We just taken stock of some exciting product lines

Non Plastic Beach

Well that name comes loaded with meaning. Unless you have been visiting another planet over the last 12 months, you cannot have missed all the media coverage on how plastics are choking up our oceans and beaches.

‘Turning the tide on plastic waste’ is a great tagline for this company and their main objective is to get rid of ‘single use’ plastics as much as possible.

Gareth and Nicola Dean are both very experienced divers who live in Oxfordshire, not that there are any beaches where they live. However, they have dived and swam all around the world, and one common thing they found in all locations was pieces of plastic floating around in the water.

These are our kind of people, they want to do something about the problems they have come up against in the world, and came up with a range of products that address the very thing that was bothering them; waste plastic. Products like wooden handled toothbrushes, bamboo cotton buds, silk dental floss and toothpaste tablets make up the current range that is available in the Straw Bale Farm Shop.

Friendly Soap

Growing up in Hebden Bridge, and then working for ethical super co-op Suma foods would appear to be a great pedigree for starting your own radical products company.

Geoff Kerouac and Rob Costello shared this life journey and have gone on to start Friendly Soap. On their website they explain how this made them “inspired, motivated and environmentally aware.”

They go on to say:

“We are committed to producing soaps that contain no animal products or by-products. We are also completely against testing cosmetics on animals and are registered with Cruelty Free International and The Vegan Society.”

So from packaging right the way through to ingredients, Friendly Soap work very hard at ticking all their own ethical and environmental boxes.

The products range consists of soaps containing Lavender, Tea Tree and Turmeric, Orange and Grapefruit, Aloe Vera, Patchouli and Sandalwood, and Peppermint and Poppy Seed. They also have special soaps such as Shaving Soap, Travel Soap and a Shampoo Bar.

Finally, all products carry the guarantee that they are Plastic Free, Cruelty Free, SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate – stuff that’s good for cleaning, but not good for skin) Free, Paraben Free and Palm Oil Free. All of this, and emanating just up the road in Todmorden, they seem to be another winner for our shop.

At Greenslate, we are really pleased to be able to stock items like this in our shop, things that make a difference to the world we care so much about.

If you know of any other products that you think meet our objectives of Local, Ethical or Organic, please let us know here.
