New Position – Straw Bale Cafe Manager

Straw Bale Café Manager

Greenslate Community Farm was established by volunteers in 2012 to provide the community with locally and sustainably grown, highly quality food, and to raise awareness about the environmental impact of food production. Our café offers simple, home cooked food using high welfare produce and, wherever possible, our own, organically produced vegetables. We aim to increase awareness of and appreciation for seasonality and ethically produced food.

We are looking for an experienced cook to manage our small café and kitchen, creating exciting and healthy dishes which maximise the use of our own, farm grown produce, demonstrating the plot to plate ethos and promoting the value of super-fresh, organically grown food.

The successful candidate will have a passion for food provenance and sustainability. The role will entail liaising with our growers to design seasonal menus with broad appeal including for vegetarian and vegan diets. In addition to the general café operation there will also be a requirement to plan and cater for regular community evens and also private functions. The farm provides opportunities for people with special needs to gain work experience, and the café manager will be responsible for directing a member of staff supervising a small number of students in the kitchen, as well as integrating this activity into the running of the café where possible. The position encompasses an administrative element including ordering stock, managing bookings, and record keeping to meet environmental health requirements.

Requirements of the role

  • Kitchen management experience including designing menus
  • Understanding of the ethical issues of farming and food production
  • Food Safety/Hygiene qualification (Level 2 minimum)
  • Planning and organisational skills
  • Creativity, adaptability and enthusiasm
  • Good communication skills and self motivation
  • Good organisational skills and record keeping

If successful at interview the candidate will be required to attend a trial shift in the kitchen.

  • Salary: £10 per hour
  • Hours: 35 hours generally between 8.00am and 5.00pm, including regular weekend shift pattern and occasional evening work
  • Workplace Pension
