The plans for Greenslate Community Farm are now gathering pace after the proposal put to Wigan MBC succeeded in securing a lease from on approximately 30 acres of the land at Greenslate.
We have recently been successful in securing funding from Wigan MBC’s Community Investment Fund to start up Greenslate Community Farms’s Care Farming project and we are also busy looking elsewhere for other funding opportunities.
There will be several publicity events taking place throughout the coming year plus volunteer days at which you will be able to find out about the project and how to get involved. All of these events will be widely advertised and details will be posted on the website – link to calendar over to the right.
Over the last 12 months we have been busy preparing the farm, setting up a small-scale trial vegetable plots as well as our first foray into animal husbandry with our very own ‘cheeky’ pigs. If you wish to volunteer for the project you can either come along on a Saturday morning or, if you have more regular time to offer, you can contact us and we will link you up with one of our team who will be working at the site.
We have also created a permaculture design plan for the site. Over the last year we have used the permaculture perspective to observe the farm through a full cycle of seasons so that the design that we implement will work with the landscape and natural elements rather than fighting against them. This will have the effect of minimising inputs and maximising outputs whilst working with the three basic permaculture ethics of “earth care, people care and fair shares”.
If you wish to become involved in any aspect of the farm from helping in the design process to working with animals there will be numerous opportunities throughout the year – keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages, our website and local press/noticeboards for details or send your contact details to be included on our mailing list.
